Smart DOOH Player: Technical Specification
Last updated: 3 July 2026
The Vojo Smart DOOH Player is a drop-in digital-signage player for unattended commercial displays. It plays video, image, and HTML content from a local cache, continues playing when the network drops, heals itself if it freezes, and restarts on its own after a power cut, all managed remotely from the Vojo platform. This sheet describes the standard supplied configuration and the minimum device requirements; the exact configuration for your order is confirmed on your quote.
1. Minimum device requirements
The Vojo Player runs on a compact 64-bit Arm Linux appliance. The standard supplied unit meets or exceeds the following; a device must meet at least the minimum to run the Player.
| Component | Minimum | Standard supplied |
|---|---|---|
| Processor | Quad-core 64-bit Arm, 2.0 GHz | Quad-core 64-bit Arm, 2.4 GHz |
| Memory | 4 GB RAM | 8 GB RAM |
| Storage | 32 GB flash storage | 32 GB+ flash storage (A2-rated); content cached locally |
| Video output | HDMI, 1080p | HDMI, 1080p (Full HD) |
| Networking | Ethernet or Wi-Fi | Gigabit Ethernet and dual-band (2.4/5 GHz) 802.11ac Wi-Fi; Bluetooth 5.0 |
| Ports | 1 × USB, HDMI | 2 × USB 3.0, 2 × USB 2.0, HDMI |
| Power | USB-C, 5 V | USB-C, 5 V (27 W supply) |
| Operating system | 64-bit Debian-based Linux | |
Where you supply your own hardware, it must meet the minimum requirements above and is not covered by the Vojo device warranty. See the Terms & Conditions and the Player Software Licence Agreement.
2. Display & orientation
- Full-screen kiosk output over HDMI to any commercial display or monitor.
- Landscape or portrait orientation, set per device (normal, left, right, or inverted rotation).
- Resolution configurable at install; 1920 × 1080 (1080p) is the standard target.
- Single display per player.
3. Content & playback
- Supported media: video (MP4, WebM, MOV), images (JPG, PNG, GIF), HTML creatives, and external web URLs (embedded).
- Optional filler: live weather and news content can be injected between paid content.
- Scheduling: by day of week and time range, with multiple operating-hour windows per day. Content and schedules sync automatically from the platform.
- Playback modes: standard round-robin (least-recently-played), or advertising mode with weighted priority for paid content, loop budgeting, and play caps.
- Proof-of-play: every play is logged locally and reported to the platform for reporting and verification.
4. Offline-first operation & reliability
- Plays offline indefinitely. All scheduled content is downloaded and cached locally; playback continues with no network connection.
- Power-cut recovery. Services start automatically on boot and resume playback after a power interruption, with no manual intervention.
- Self-healing. The kiosk auto-restarts on crash; a watchdog monitors health (including memory pressure) and recovers a frozen display; playback errors auto-retry before reloading.
- Storage protection. Playback state and logs are cached in memory and written in periodic batches, greatly reducing storage wear.
5. Networking & connectivity
- Connects by Ethernet or Wi-Fi; either can be used.
- Guided Wi-Fi setup: when a device is offline it raises its own hotspot and captive portal and shows an on-screen QR code so a phone or laptop can join and enter Wi-Fi details.
- Outbound only. The player communicates outbound over HTTPS to the Vojo platform; it does not require any inbound ports to be opened.
- Bandwidth: used mainly to download content ahead of play; steady-state bandwidth is low. A stable connection is recommended for content updates and reporting.
6. Remote management & monitoring
- Push and update content and schedules to any player from the Vojo platform, online or off.
- Remotely reboot, restart, and run diagnostics on a device.
- Remote screenshots of the live display for diagnostics and verification.
- Automatic check-in every 2 minutes reporting device health (disk space, processor temperature, memory usage, and software version) for live fleet monitoring.
- Registration by code; migrated and replacement units self-configure on first start.
7. Security
- Outbound-only communication with the platform over HTTPS; no inbound ports required.
- The local device API binds to the device itself and is not exposed externally by default.
- Stored credentials are encrypted at rest on the device.
- Software updates are delivered as signed, self-contained release packages.
8. What you provide
- A commercial display or monitor with an HDMI input.
- Mains power at the screen location and a stable Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection.
- An active Vojo Player subscription (required for the player to operate).
- Indoor installation in a suitable, ventilated location.
